one boy checked the depth of the water with an iron rod, in the tank near the canteen.
a few others surrounded him. they were all looking at the tank which was partially covered with asbestos sheets.
i could see a little crowd as i was coming out of the canteen with my pals, a bar of chocolate in hand.
i asked a friend , " what's happening???"
he replied, " a little puppy drowned ".. i froze with terror because i love puppies. oh poor little puppy :(
a man was getting into the tank. it was quite difficult as there was no proper foothold in the tank. my friends went equally blank and we were standing there, blinking, but praying real hard.... we saw the man haul up the puppy. it was wet and shivering. he handed it upwards and placed him on the ground... he rubbed its chest and squeezed some water out of its little lungs and tummy. the puppy's ears drooped even more and its eyes got filmy and it could barely see and breathe....
its stared a little, there was terror in its eyes..... its head drooped as the man tried in vain to revive the puppy back to life. it died in a few minutes.
it was an extremely cute puppy, a light-brown stray Labrador that couldn't have been more than 3 weeks old.. its tail was a cute little thing. tiny paws. it looked so cuddly. i would have loved him for a pet.
i tried not to take it hard on myself. but the poor puppy's lifeless body brought tears to my eyes. i prayed for its soul to rest in peace.
when i narrated the mishap to others, between tears and cheek-wiping... i kinda expected all of them to laugh at me. but then, it was good that they could understand!! it was like a baby dying. who cares if its a human or an animal! it was a living being and a puppy at that... whatever be the form of life, the souls are all the same for all living beings.
i request all readers to take precautionary measures to avoid such mishaps in your surroundings. life isn't a joke.
i wish that tank was fully covered. the puppy wouldn't have drowned at all. it would be happily prancing about, making all of us laugh. i wish i had known enough to save the puppy's life.
i am going to learn about such stuff even if it is going to sound scary. and please, u folks must learn about it too... u could save a lot of lives!! after all, not many know the value of life.. today, it is a cheap "commodity" ... and it is high time we understood it and made a difference to the surroundings.
hey puppy, we' ll miss u a lot...
